Maldives: when to go, what it costs and the best resorts
The honest 2026 Maldives guide — which atoll, water villa or beach villa, seaplane or speedboat, and why five nights is the sweet spot.

The most common misconception about the Maldives
It's not "an island." It's an archipelago of nearly 1,200 islands across 26 atolls along 900 km in the Indian Ocean. Each atoll has slightly different weather, each resort sits on its own island, and transfer time can change the experience more than the villa type.
People who book on Booking.com staring at the overwater bungalow photo often forget to check how many atolls away from Malé it is. Mess up the logistics, and the trip starts with six lost hours in transfers.
When to go: the 2026 window
The Maldives has two seasons:
- Dry season (November to April) — high season, clear skies, excellent dive visibility, calm sea. Rates 30–50% higher.
- Wet season (May to October) — short but intense rains, choppier sea, but it's the only season for mantas and whale sharks in Baa atoll (June to November).
The safest window: December to February. January is the most predictable. Late October and early November have transitional rates and already stable weather — good value.
Avoid New Year's if you want reasonable pricing. Resorts charge Christmas/NYE supplements and require seven-night minimums in many cases.
How many nights — the 5-night rule
Five nights is the balance between cost and experience. Less than that, and jet lag (12h) eats two days. More than that, and even beach-obsessed travellers start missing scenery change.
The combination that works best: 5 nights in the Maldives + 4 to 6 nights at a nearby destination — Sri Lanka, Dubai, Singapore or Thailand. It breaks the rhythm, justifies the long flight, makes two trips in one.
Which atoll to choose
The crucial question nobody asks. It's not "which resort," it's "which atoll."
| Atoll | Distance from Malé | Transfer | Profile |
|---|---|---|---|
| North Malé Atoll | 0–40 km | Speedboat (30–60min) | Accessible, mid-cost |
| South Malé Atoll | 40–80 km | Speedboat (60–90min) | Calm, good diving |
| Baa Atoll | 110 km | Seaplane (30min) | Mantas, UNESCO Biosphere |
| Raa / Noonu | 130–180 km | Seaplane (40min) | Ultra-luxury, isolation |
| Ari Atoll | 80–110 km | Seaplane (25min) | Best diving, whale sharks |
| Haa Alif | 280 km | Seaplane + speedboat (90min) | Remote, new, exclusive |
Practical rule: if you arrive in Malé at night, pick an atoll accessible by speedboat (seaplanes only fly with daylight, so you sleep in Malé and only transfer the next day). If you arrive morning or afternoon, a distant atoll by seaplane is part of the experience — the flight over the atolls is one of the most cinematic moments in the Maldives.
Water villa or beach villa: the truth
Everyone wants a water villa. It's the photo that defines the destination. But:
- Water villa: 360° ocean view, stairs straight into the sea, private deck. Sun hits the deck exactly when no one wants to be exposed.
- Beach villa: private garden, palm shade, sand between toes, usually 30–40% cheaper.
The move we recommend for stays of 5 nights or more: split the stay. Three nights beach villa + two nights water villa. The contrast elevates both.
Best resorts for 2026, by profile

What it costs: the real math
For a couple, 5 nights half-board, mid-luxury standard:
- Brazil–Malé round-trip flight: USD 1,600 to 2,800 per person
- Seaplane transfer round trip: USD 600 to 900 per person
- 5 nights in a villa with half-board: USD 5,000 to 12,000 (couple)
- Excursions and extra drinks: USD 800 to 2,000 (couple)
Reference total: USD 10,000 to 22,000 per couple for 5 nights.
The question we ask anyone looking at the Maldives: is it worth spending everything there, or splitting between Maldives and a second destination? Almost always worth splitting. Sri Lanka adds narrative at a fraction of the Maldives daily cost.
What nobody tells you
- Seaplanes don't fly at night. If your flight arrives after 4pm in Malé and the resort is seaplane-access, you'll sleep in Malé and only transfer the next day. Verify at booking.
- All-inclusive isn't always a good deal. At premium resorts, all-inclusive covers generic champagne but not tasting options. Worth calculating half-board plus extras as you go.
- Alcohol only inside the resort. The Maldives is a Muslim country. Airport purchases are forbidden. Don't try.
- Wi-Fi can be weak even at luxury resorts. Think about this if you're working remotely.
- Reef shoes are more useful than anything else you'll pack. Coral cuts.
Maldives combined with other destinations
The combinations we book most for 2026:
- Maldives + Sri Lanka — 5 days on the island, 5 in Ella's tea hills and Yala safari
- Maldives + Dubai — 5 days on the island, 3 in Dubai (perfect for the connection)
- Maldives + Singapore — 5 + 3 days, more culturally rich
- Maldives + Thailand — 5 + 7 days, great for Asia lovers
When to start planning
Maldives resorts for January and February are booked eight to ten months ahead. Corner suites, slide villas and the best Baa atoll resorts (during manta season) can sell out a year out. If you're thinking of going between December 2026 and April 2027, start looking now.
Because we work with direct suppliers from the major hotel groups, we usually secure rates and amenities that don't appear on public platforms — in-villa breakfast, transfer upgrades, private beach dinners. If it makes sense, chat with our consultancy is the natural place to start.
